How to Clean Masonry

Cleaning New Masonry Construction

Cleaning new masonry can be a challenge for many people. Compared to the cost of a brick, stone, or concrete building, the price of post-construction cleaning is small. A good clean can bring out the beauty of masonry. However, when this is done incorrectly, its appearance can often be ruined beyond repair. Here are some tips for avoiding these pitfalls when cleaning new masonry.

Always test before cleaning.

Test out your cleaning product on a hidden part of the surface. Manufacturers will typically recommend testing a 4-square-foot area.

Never clean until the mortar has been cured.

The best time to clean is anywhere between 14 to 28 days after construction. Mortar and grout get tougher to clean the longer they are left on the surface. Cleaning before the mortar has cured will often damage the joints. With one exception: high-strength mortars are best cleaned within 3-7 days. So always test beforehand.

Don’t sandblast or use muriatic acid.

Both methods will damage surfaces. Blasting with sand or sand substitutes can etch brick-and-mortar joints. This leaves masonry open to weather-related decay. The same can be said when using muriatic acid; this will not stop with only dissolving dirt and mortar smears. It could also streak, etch, bleach, burn or create new metallic stains on the masonry.

Pre-wet the surface with clean water.

This is one of the most important steps to remember when giving a building a more uniform and clean appearance. Pre-wetting keeps the cleaner on the surface, where it will do its job. The cleaner is unable to soak into a pre-wet surface as the water has already done that.

Apply the cleaner with a low-pressure spray.

A high-pressure spray over 50 psi will push the cleaner into the brick. Once in, it is almost impossible to get out, which is when stains will occur.
